Belly (her name is Isabel) spends her summer (the entire summer of her whole life) at Susannah’s beach house. Susanah is Laurel’s (her mother’s) best friend, and she has two sons, Jeremiah and Conrad. They have all been friends, including Steven, her older brother, but frequently she gets left out simply because she’s a girl. They would tease her and not include her in parties because she was too young.

However, this summer, she was already considered a grown-up (15, going on 16), and the fisher boys look at her differently, like she’s a girl and not just another kid they could tease.

Belly has always liked Conrad, the older one, and Jeremiah was her friend, although he confesses that he wants her later in the book.

Other relevant scenes in the book:

  •  She had a summer fling (Cam), the first guy who told her she was beautiful and they will hang out, but the fisher boys always ruin it, acting like protective brothers since Steven is no longer around because he’s off looking for universities.
  • Susannah is sick. She has breast cancer.
  • Jeremiah is her first kiss, which happened as a dare.
  • She once brought her best friend Taylor, who once liked Conrad, then Jeremiah, but ended up hooking up with Steven.
