Since she was a kid, Scarlett Dragna has been writing letters to Legend, the master of Caraval. She wanted to play in Caraval, along with her younger sister, Donatella Dragna. When Scarlett was about to get married, she sent one last letter to Legend, and at that time, she got a reply and an invitation. Scarlett, Tella, and Julian (the sailor) went to Caraval, Tella was kidnapped by Legend, and it turns out that the game revolves around Tella. The first player that finds Tella wins and can get a wish as a reward. Scarlett and Julian helped each other and eventually fell in love with each other (initially Tella and Julian; however, Julian admitted that he was just using Tella to get hold of the ticket to Caraval.) The two of them played the game, looking for clues and helping each other. They have been warned that most parts of the game are not genuine. However, they were still fearful (they even got hurt) when they saw Scarlett’s father and fiancée. They are the person Tella and Scarlett are running away from, but they follow them to Caraval, and they want to take the siblings home, to punish them.
After a couple of struggles, Scarlett finally met Tella, and to her relief, she was fine. However, Julian is already dead. He was killed by Legend because he admitted the truth – that Julian is a part of a game. When Tella and Scarlett reconciled, there was still something wrong. Tella was convinced that Caraval was a safe place, and she revealed that she was in love with someone in Caraval named Daniel, but when Daniel entered, Scarlett recognized him as Legend. She warns Tella, but she just ends up getting tied. After a while, their father enters, accompanied by Scarlett’s fiancé. They were arguing. Tella mentions that she can do anything for Scarlett, which was provoked by Legend, and Tella ends up jumping from the balcony. Since Tella is already dead, their father no longer has any control over Scarlett and ends up leaving the Caraval with her supposed to be fiancé. It was a good thing that they could get rid of their father, but Scarlett was devastated because Tella and Julian were dead. She wept – and then wished Tella back to life.
Scarlett’s love for Tella brought her back to life, and they reunited. It was then revealed that Tella made a game with Legend since Tella believes that her sister loves her enough to give her back to life. She has been exchanging letters with Legend. Also, it was revealed that who they know as Legend was not the real Legend.
At the end of the novel, Tella and Scarlett attend a party. At that party, Scarlett saw Julian. She was so relieved to find him alive, although he was already talking to another lady at that time. Nevertheless, she approached Julian, and they spoke, and he admitted that he is a part of the game and is related to Legend.
(To add to the story, Scarlett and Tella’s grandmother named Annalise broke Legend’s heart by marrying another man.)
