My Escape (Poem #13)

When the sun rises
you would be by my side
you would smile
and i’d say:

“Last night,
I remember you holding me tight.”
and you would shrug
thinking that what i meant was
a “thank you”
instead of a “how could you”

You thought
that being held on
was enough for me

You thought
your arms wrapped around me
could make up the word “sorry”
that a thousand times
you failed to say

So if tonight
you realize
that once again i’m sleeping by your side
prepare yourself for tomorrow’s sight:

Empty sheets, empty hallways
you’ll call my name
and will be answered by silence
you’ll realize
that I finally escaped
you’re left alone
to devour my absence

Just reading and writing my way out of this messy adult life! I have transitioned from having piles of notebooks stacked underneath my bed from writing on the internet and allowing people worldwide to read.
