She’s Climbing His Standards (Poem #17)

He said,”I want my girl calm
but a little stormy inside
I want her to crave being in my arms
but at the same time
I want her distant
I want her reserved

in some nights
I want her wild, but a little shy
I want her loud, but with a soft side

I want breakfasts in bed
sometimes I just want the sight of her head
resting on my chest
but sometimes,
I want to skip breakfasts
because there will be nights that will last
when our world will be spinning so fast
we hold on to the bottle of gin in our hands

I want to get drunk with her too
every once in a while
I want my girl to dance with me in the club
I also want my girl contented
with just looking at the stars
at the back of my truck
I want her to love hiking and climbing
I want her cheering at my game
I want her dressing like the girls in the runway
but sometimes I want her all covered up
and just undresses for me

And most of all
I want her to understand me
to tell me straight up what’s inside her mind
instead of making me go through equations first

I want to be the only one she loves
the only name she mumbles
I want all that
I want her to be all that.”

And she replied
“That sounds hard
who do you think you are to demand?”

She was about to step back
to realize that who she is
will remain exactly as it is
despite who she will be with
but her heart was beating so fast
it did something before her body could move

It was the end of her, she knew
but she also knows that with the risk,
she would be happier too
So she said,
“Given the chance, I’d try to be all that.”
