What We Saw by Aaron Hartzler – Novel Summary
The first scene was about a video of five year old Kate Welton and Ben Cody playing soccer, and Kate accidentally hitting Ben with a ball, leaving a scar.
Next scene is Kate has a hangover from a house party. She remembered Ben taking her home and something about the both of them acting really sweet with each other. She later on came over to thank Ben.
Days after that, police officers went to their school to arrest Doone, Deacon and Reggie for raping Stacey Stallard. The whole school was with Doone and against Stacey because she was known to be slutty. Doone is rich and a basketball player – so he’s admired in school. Stacey stopped going to school and was still blamed for the attention the school was getting. They blamed her for the clothes she wore and for how drunk she was.
When Doone and his friends pleaded not guilty, the students were happy because they supported them – but then a feminist group threatened to upload a video of them raping Stacey. Before the video could be shown, Kate saw it, and she reported it to the counselor. Then Kate saw the video again with his brother, Will, and that time she watched it till the very end and discovered that her boyfriend, Ben, was there too because she recognized the scar. She broke up with him and reported the video to the investigator. In the end, she transferred school, Stacey moved, and Doone & his friends were in jail for a year (just a year because of their connections).
